Sharon and I may be a little behind on this, but we heard a song by the guitar duo, Rodrigo y Gabriela, on KFOG and promptly bought an album … their latest … “Live in Japan.” It’s really hard to describe the music precisely, but we both found it, in a word, amazing. It’s some of the most mind-blowing guitar work I’ve ever heard: incredibly technical AND beautiful. It evokes flamenco in that it’s performed on classical guitars with high-speed rhythms hammered out on the guitar bodies, but is usually described in reviews as Latin tinged fusion of a variety of styles, notably including speed metal. When Sharon and I heard it, we thought of very high-energy flamenco with beautiful melodies and runs and intricate picking. The percussion (again, all on the guitars) is amazingly complex and powerful. Anyway, check it out. Their stuff is on iTunes and Amazon, and you can listen to some full length songs on their myspace page. You’ll be glad you did.

We love living in Alameda for a lot of reasons. One of them, for me, is the views of the shipyards and shipping from the old Navy base. I snapped this picture of the historic Hornet (among its accomplishments, it picked up the Apollo capsule after at least one moon shot).

Been meaning to post about this for a while. On December 1, we were treated to an amazing lights show at the Encinal Yacht Club. Notwithstanding Cal football’s complete collapse and loss to Stanfurd, it was a good evening. I’ve uploaded a few pics of just before many of the boats in this marina sailed out with lights blazing for a “yacht parade” in the Oakland estuary. It was quite beautiful and a great kick-off for the holiday season! More pics available on the photo page.

It’s been a while since I last wrote anything here; as a friend we’ll call Tex predicted, it becomes difficult to keep up the pace of new posts that one might have in the early going of one of these things, especially when the audience is small. However, just thought I drop in an update. Sharon’s official due date for number two is February 15, but it really could be any time now. We’ve got the nursery set up, and Jay is generally very excited for the new arrival (though I really doubt he fully understands the implications!). I’ll keep posting updates even if the update is, “nothing new” and will post here as soon as I can with a preliminary announcement and photos when the big day comes.
